You can hunt for any inmate in any state prison and find all the relevant inmate information. All you have to do is select the state, and then click on the state prison the inmate is located in. Then you’ll be directed to the state’s inmate finder where you can look up those incarcerated, on probation or on parole. Depending on the state you will also have access to a list of convictions including what the inmate is serving time for. While looking for an inmate using our State Inmate Finder you’ll need to know the first and last name of the inmate and the inmate department of correction number. There are many inmates with similar names so it’s imperative that you know all this information to insure you’re finding the correct inmate. If you’re in search of federal inmates then visit the Federal Inmate Finder.

A state inmate ends up in a state prison or penitentiary for a multitude of violations. Most notably are criminal offenses that are tried in a state court where a conviction is handed down and the inmate is sentenced to a state prison. Initially a person is often placed in a city or county jail until the court proceeding takes place where the inmate in question is sentenced. Depending on the nature of the crime and the court’s sentencing, the inmate will either end up in a state prison, penitentiary or correctional facility.  State prisons vary from federal prison and local jail facilities in many respects. Most notably of these differences are the inmate populations and crimes and convictions that landed the inmates there. In the United States there are currently over 1,700 state prisons, 102 federal prisons and 3,200 local jails and over 2.4 million inmates that have been incarcerated.
